ASSAM VALLEY
Assam (Asom, Axom) is a beautiful and diverse state with an incredible range of cultures and landscapes located in the northeast of India. It shares it’s borders in the North and East with the Kingdom of Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. Along the south lies Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Meghalaya lies to her South-West, Bengal and Bangladesh to her West The Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport of Guwahati is well connected by air to most of the metros in the country. There are regular flights to Guwahati running all year long on daily basis. All the major carriers of the country like Jet Airways, Kingfisher Red, SpiceJet, Go Air Business, JetLite and IndiGo airlines connect Guwahati to most of the major cities of India. Druk Air operates a weekly flight to Bangkok. Most of the carriers also operate flights connecting the other towns of Assam like Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Tezpur and Silchar to Guwahati and to the other major cities in India.
A convenient Indian Railways network runs throughout the state connecting major Indian cities with Assam. There are train services connecting Assam to all corners of the country such as Kolkata, New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum. Guwahati, the largest city in Northeast India, is the hub of the road network to the north eastern region. A good network of National Highways and other roads connect Assam to all the prime cities of India. October to April is considered the best time to visit Assam as these months offer a mild and moderate climate with pleasant and sunny days and cool nights. Assam is never extremely cold or hot though during December and January night time temperatures may fall to single digit numbers.
Day 1: Bagdogra/NJP – Darjeeling 93 kms 3 hours approx.
Assistance at the airport/railway station on arrival and drive to Darjeeling. Overnight at hotel.
Day 2: Darjeeling
Early morning visit Tiger Hill to see a beautiful sunrise and Himalayan Range like Kanchandzonga, Mount Everest etc. One can see the horizon changing colors just before sunrise and then the entire Himalayan range turn golden. It is truly a majestic sight and Ghoom Monastery which is oldest Monastery in the area which was built in 1875 and one can see the image of Mythey Buddha 15ft. height on the way back from Tiger Hill. Breakfast at the hotel and proceed for city tour visiting Himalayan Mountaineering Institute(closed on Thursday) which was started by Tenzing Norgay after he climbed Mt. Everest, Zoological Park(closed on Thursday), Tibetan Refugee Centre(closed on Sunday), Tenzing Rock, Gombu Rock and Happy Valley Tea Estate(from outside). Overnight at hotel.
Day 3: Darjeeling – Gangtok 98 kms 4 hours approx.
Breakfast at the hotel and drive to Gangtok en route visiting Teesta Village. Later proceed for city tour visiting Rumtek Monastery, Do Drul Chorten, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology (closed on Sundays), Cottage Industry (closed on Sundays) and Flower Show Complex. Overnight at hotel.
Day 4: Gangtok
Breakfast at the hotel and full day excursion to Changu Lake which is 35 Kms from Gangtok at an altitude of 12,400 feet. The lake derives its waters from melting snows off the surrounding mountains Legends say that lamas could forecast the future by studying the color of the lake’s waters. Also visit Baba Mandir. Overnight at hotel.
Day 5: Gangtok - Kalimpong 83 kms approx. 3 hrs
Breakfast at the hotel and drive to Kalimpong. Afternoon sightseeing in Kalimpong city tour visiting Zang Dog Palri Fo Brang Monastery, Tharpa Choling Monastery, Thongsa Gumpa and flower nurseries. Overnight at hotel
Day 6: Kalimpong – Bagdogra/NJP 80 kms 3 hours approx.
Breakfast at the hotel and drive to Bagdogra/NJP in time for flight/train to onward destination.
